After how many years do I have to replace an old fire detector with a new one?
Question by: Wolfgang on Jun 7, 2025, 1:22 PM
A fire detector (smoke / heat detector) should generally be replaced every 10 years. This is the standard service life of most smoke detectors, including those from Jablotron, Notifier and DSC.

Why replace after 10 years?
> Sensor ageing: The smoke detector loses its sensitivity over time.
> Battery wear: Even models with long-life batteries can run out after 10 years.
> Reliability: After 10 years, the risk of faults increases and security systems must always be reliable.

How can I tell if my smoke detector is dirty?

To test the detector, press the detector body against the base and wait until an LED light illuminates. The LED flashing signals the switch to test mode. The LED flashes for the entire duration of the test. When the test is complete, turn off the LED. The detector then signals the result.
If the alarm beeps once, the test has been successfully completed. If an error is detected, the LED flashes and beeps three times. In this case, repeat the test, and if you get the same result, the detector must be sent to the service center. If the battery is low, there is no acoustic signaling, but only a single flash when the test is completed.

ST-A Models:
During testing, all measured information such as temperature, smoke, and dirt in the detection chamber is updated. The measured values can be viewed using F-Link software in the Diagnostics tab. Hover the cursor over the Voltage/Loss option, and a tooltip will appear showing the current status of all measured information.

Kind regards
