Can I connect an external poe switch to any of the ports on this NVR and the connect all the rest of the cameras to the external poe switch or switches

Almost correct. You just can connect the PoE switch to your network, the same network where the NVR is connected. The NVR then sees all the cameras in the network. You do not need to use the PoE ports of the NVR.
